I am looking forward to the Walk to Cure Psoriasis here in Los Angeles on Saturday, May 4th. If you don’t live in the Los Angeles area there are 21 different locations around the States where the National Psoriasis Foundation hosts this event. It is a fundraising event like other walks on behalf of medical conditions. According to their website, the organizers are planning many other activities, including a raffle and a Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Health Fair.
I see this event as a natural extension of the psoriasis support group we started in January. Getting together with others with psoriasis can be such an amazing and freeing experience. For years I didn’t make any effort to get out to meet others with psoriasis. Once I moved to Los Angeles I took the opportunity to join local psoriasis events when I could. I made instant connections with a few people at those events. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make a lot of the events or support groups due to time conflicts or distance. So I figured I would start my own support group! Now we’re hoping to go as a group to join many others for the cause of relieving the suffering of psoriasis and to support research toward a cure.
The Los Angeles Walk to Cure Psoriasis ambassador this year is Miss California 2013, Mabelynn Capeluj. I had the opportunity to interview her recently about her experience living with psoriasis since being diagnosed at age 16. She has a very positive outlook and inspirational story. I’m looking forward to meeting her in person after conducting the interview over the phone. Look for her story here on the blog soon.
If you can’t make it out to a Walk to Cure Psoriasis event in your locale, be sure to check out the website. There are other ways to get involved, stay connected, and raise psoriasis awareness.
